Light Falling Softly

Light falls softly tonight.

It is the end of a dream,
a coming to an end
of what we have hoped for:
the water on the stone
in Waikiki, the waves in the calm
of this night that we walk
our souls home.

You have said your name
is the future, one implicating
your people, their stories
their songs, their fears too:
your people who have come
to these islands of sorrow
and the dance of bodies
under the sun that beats
the flesh to raid the strength
the Ilokano sinews have got.

Light falls softly on the sand,
the grain glitters and sings
of pains it had hid
a hundredfold
a thousandfold.
