Aginaldaw a Daniw ti Rebelion

PERHAPS they killed her because of her name? The 20-year-old teacher abducted by unknown armed men last Wednesday in Davao City and found dead late on Thursday in Carmen, Davao del Norte bore an unusual name: Rebelyn. It is only human nature to speculate that her name was an act of everyday poetry, chosen in homage to her father. Inquirer editorial, Mar 9/09

Aginaldaw a daniw

ti rebolusion, Rebelyn,

sika nga atang ti agnernerbios

a panawen dagiti agmandi a nakem

iti San Isidro a patron dagiti adipen.

Sika ti daton ti ama

a kumander dagiti amin a butengmi

tapno kadagiti nangisit a pangngadua

kadagiti bautek ti balay ti dorobo nga ili

sadiay, sadiay a mabirokan

ti birtud ti tured nga iti komunion

ket lak-amen matagibi a kari.

Sika ti amam, kannayon ti daniwna

kadagiti panagkalkallautang

tapno agbirok kaipapanan

kadagiti  aripit a niliputan ti danum

kanal nga agpettapettak

bantay nga agdungdung-aw iti pannakapukaw

dagiti agapon nga orkidia

baybay nga agal-alikuno iti sabidong

dagiti  kinelleng a no agragut ket ti rugso

ti amo nga agmanso

iti agmatsurra a pakarso

dagiti baliwegweg a dudon.

Ti pannakaabut ti barukong ken dalem

ti sukat ti  panakilinnemmeng ti amam

kadagiti tulisan iti daniw nga aginaldaw.

Maysa a musang ti rebelde nga artena

dida makemmeg ti paulo ti daniwna

dida maibalud dagiti daradara a linabag

ni ayat iti barukong nga ita ket adda kenka.

Iti ipupusay iti poder dagiti takrot

ket ti panagungar dagiti buyot

ti lawag nga iti napalabas

ket sinabidungan dagiti rapas

kadagiti kampo militar  ni kinaranggas.

Sika ti sandi dagiti amin nga atangmi.

Saan, saanmi nga ibitan ti ipapanaw

ta addakanto kadagiti samiweng

addaka kadagiti pantok ti bantay

a sadiay sabtenmi ti baro nga aldaw.

Awananka iti basol.

Addaanka iti pakapilawan:

sika ti putot ti amam nga iti kinalinteg

sadiay laeng nga ammona ti mamakawan.

Lugar ti pakapasagan dagiti tagainep,

Rebelyn a dungngo dagiti kaliado nga isip.

Lugar met ti pangtedan iti wayawaya

iti ili nga iti pananglimlimo makaruk-at.

Perfect homage!

Um, there's absolutely nothing wrong with hoping some among our Filipino writers would aspire to write at a level worthy of a Nobel, is there? I've read a couple of those written by the Japanese Nobel laureates and I distinctly remember Yasunari Kawabata's gorgeous and poetic writing in "Snow Country", a book about love and loss of love which could have just unfolded as regional literature. I happen to think that there are some Filipino writers who are capable of painting the scenes that Kawabata lyrically transforms to life in this particular novel.

No pacapilawan pay ti agdarepdep, diac ammon...

Manong Joe, you are right about Kawabata. Ngem sinuratna daytoy iti Japon, iti lengguahe a maawatan ken naawatan dagiti adu nga umili iti Japon. Ti problema ken Manong Kiko--ken daytoy ti rumrummuar iti Nobel Committee--ket iti Ingles a nagsurat. It is a question of: sinno ti nakairantaan ti sinuratmo. I know: this is a difficult issue. Ngem kaduanna kadagiti mangb-abak a saan nga Ingles-spokening ket talaga met nga iti lengguahe dagiti umilida ti ar-aramatenda a medium. Daytoy ti puntok iti daytoy a banag, ken mainaig daytoy iti timple nga insistence iti sentrista a nosion ti panagsuratan, ti panagbalin a makipagili, kdpy.
Ti pananglipat ti kina-Ilokano gapu ta nasken a lagipen ti kina-Filipino ket maysa a delikado a kapampanunotan ti maysa a mararaem a mannurat.

Saan, saan a pakapilawan ti agdarepdep...
