Tentativo a komentario kadagiti nangabak iti Palanca Awards, Short Story Category, Part 1.
LET IT BE on record, we did not know who was competing in the awards, as we should.
And we were directed by the Palanca organizers not to say anything or reveal anything to the public before the awarding ceremonies.
Now that the Palanca is out, let me cite from my notes that I submitted to the Palanca for their documentation. My next task is to write an essay on these stories as a critic and as a judge. [Well, some people say in the past said and had written on the Internet this: 'Who assigned him to be a critic of Ilokano literature?' Duh.]
We have set a standard, and each prize must meet that the standards in terms of scores. You do not meet the total score for three people for that standard even if you are the best, NO WAY, JOSE! [That is a Los Angeles expression for you, sirs!]
On the short story, "Mennamenna ti Maysa a Mannurat iti Ipupusayna iti Maysa a Nadagaang a Malem":
"Maysa 'kano' a ‘post-modernista’ nga estoria a nakailistaan dagiti nagsisina a pasamak ti biag ti maysa a lalaki nga agtawen iti 40, awanan-nagan.
"Adda sorpresa ti kastoy a panagestoria, ngem ti dakesna, dina nadaeran a sustenerin dagiti kidkiddawen ti post-modernismo a narativo.
"Adda sarangsang ti lengguahe daytoy a narativo, sarangsang a mangsarsarming kadagiti babassit ken dadakkel a version ti pudno ti aginaldaw a panagbiag. Ti imasna, adda sawiri nga arkitektura iti panagilistana—iti wagas ti maysa a katalogo—kadagiti nagsisina a padas, pampanunot, ken lagip ti nasao nga agbibiag.
"Daytoy a klase ti experimentasion ti maysa kadagiti wagas ti panangpabaknang iti literatura Ilokano la ket ta sustenerin ti panagestoria dagiti premisas ti kastoy a panagipeksa kadagiti desentralisado a padas ti tao.
